Understanding the five elements (五行)
How this five elements calculator works
Enter your birth date. The calculator builds your Four Pillars (Saju, or Bazi) chart with the same engine as our Saju calculator, then shows the element of your day master, how the five elements are spread across your chart, and the color, season, direction, and taste that the classical tables pair with your element. Birth time is optional; without it the hour pillar is left out instead of guessed.
What is my element in Chinese astrology?
In the Four Pillars system, "your element" usually means the element of your day master: the first character of the day you were born. It is not the element of your birth year. A year name such as "Fire Goat" describes the year itself, and everyone born in that year shares it.
The five elements and their cycles
The five elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. In the generating cycle, Wood feeds Fire, Fire feeds Earth, Earth feeds Metal, Metal feeds Water, Water feeds Wood. In the controlling cycle, Wood holds Earth in check, Fire holds Metal in check, Earth holds Water in check, Metal holds Wood in check, Water holds Fire in check.
2027 is a Fire Goat year
The 2027 saju year is 丁未. Its first character 丁 belongs to Fire, and its second character 未, the Goat, belongs to Earth. The saju year begins at Lichun, the start of spring, on February 4, 2027, not on January 1 or at Lunar New Year.
Each of the eight characters in your chart adds weight to one element, and the elements held inside each earthly branch add a smaller weight. The percentages show each element's share of that total, rounded to whole numbers. They describe the structure of the chart; they are not a prediction.
Yes. Finding your element and your chart's element balance is free and needs no sign-up. Only a personal reading of the chart is a paid feature.
Do I need my birth time?
No. Your element comes from the day you were born, so the date is enough. A birth time adds the hour pillar, which changes the balance percentages but not your element.
Why five elements and not four?
Chinese and Korean astrology use a five-element system (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water). It is a different system from the four elements of Western astrology.
How is this different from the Saju calculator?
Both use the same chart engine. The Saju calculator shows all four pillars; this tool focuses on your element, the element balance, and how a year's elements meet yours.
